New Online Anti-Racism Training Tackles Anti-Black Racism in the Child Welfare System

TORONTO, Ont., Oct 4, 2021 “KOJO Institute will host Daring to Do„¢: A Framework for Anti-Racist Action in Child Welfare on November 10th, 17th, and 24th, 2021. This three-part online anti-racism training series gives professionals who work with children and youth practical, action-oriented tools and strategies to address ongoing issues of anti-Black racism. The series is by Kike Ojo-Thompson, the award-winning equity expert who spearheaded the development and implementation of Canada's first ever initiative designed to address anti-Black racism in child welfare.  

According to One Vision, One Voice, Black families are 40% more likely to be reported to and investigated by child welfare and child protection services. Black children are also 13% more likely than white children to be removed from their parents' care. The issue of anti-Black racism is apparent, but for many organizations and professionals, the path towards meaningful anti-racist action and change is less clear. 

œAnti-Black racism and anti-racism work are complicated, nuanced work. Daring to Do„¢ is a framework, a way to approach and get started in this work; a way to understand how to act and what to do, ultimately resulting in better decision-making, increased skills, and everyone playing their part, said Ojo-Thompson, founder and Principal Consultant of KOJO Institute. 

Daring to Do„¢ equips professionals to understand how and why anti-Black racism is happening and develops their competence and capacity to disrupt it and follow through on their responsibility to protecting the wellbeing of all children.

Registration for Daring to Do: A Framework for Anti-Racist Action in Child Welfare is now open to all child welfare employees, as well as any professionals and organizations who work directly with children, youth, and families. The 90-minute sessions will be hosted online on November 10^th, 17^th, and 24^th from 7:00pm “ 8:30 pm.

Daring to Do„¢ Training Success

Child welfare is the third sector in Canada to be addressed by Daring to Do„¢. The program launched with the education sector in September 2020 and supported the community and social services sector this past May. Thus far, KOJO Institute has hosted more than 600 professionals for Daring to Do„¢ learning series, with over 90% of participants reporting that they found the program's framework to be a practical and transformative tool for addressing anti-Black racism and pursuing equity in their organization.
