Julie Small is a long-time reporter who covers California government and politics for KPCC-FM, including the legislature, state agencies, and the governor. She has also reported on prison overcrowding, criminal justice, health care, and agriculture. Before joining KPCC-FM, she worked for Minnesota Public Radio's Marketplace for seven years as their foreign editor covering Asia. Small also produced the Marketplace Morning Report and was the Los Angeles producer for the show's 2006 broadcasts from China. Small has also worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, NPR, The California Report, and Weekend America.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Small has won many awards, including a 2007 Los Angeles Press Club Award for Breaking News, a 2007 California Endowment for Health Care Reporting Fellowship, a 2005 John Hopkins University SAIS Gatekeepers Fellowship to India, a 2003 East-West Center's Jefferson Fellowship in Asia Studies in South Korea and Vietnam, and a 2001 Radio In the American Sector Fellowship in German Studies.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Before becoming a radio journalist, Small worked in the securities and investment industry and helped to win a settlement from the U.S. Department of Justice in 1998 for redress of Japanese-Latin Americans interned during World War II.
