DonnaInk Publications, L.L.C. through their Little Buggy Productions Children's Imprint, releases Author J. R. Hatcher's "TBI Guy's Learnin' Lessons," second series title. This is Hatcher's debut children's disability awareness series relative to the character TBI Guy and addresses the day-to-day activities of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor. Jamie, who sustained a brain injury in 2003, has worked diligently for over eighteen years in recovery where doctors continuously deem him 'remarkable'.
TBI Guy shared, "In living, folks do not discern differences in daily activities and achievements for TBI Guys or Girls. For instance, when brain injury survivors are bullied, recovery is adversely impacted. In achieving a home purchase as a TBI Survivor, TBI Guy experienced neighbor bullying where he was threatened his cat would be trapped and dumped twenty miles away while the neighbor's cat continued to roam free causing many sleepless nights. In executing daily routines - even if differently than non-TBI Survivors, achievements are reached each day in the TBI Guys and Girls life and bullying shouldn't thwart those gains.
"Where TBI Guys or Girls are more cognitive, they may seem overly engaging when asking questions or in desiring to be friends and many community members use this opportunity to bully but by learning techniques in "Dealin' With Bullies" overcoming prejudiced is attainable. TBI Guy suggests interested people view "Regarding Henry" or "50 First Dates" to learn more about basic idiosyncrasies TBI recoverees may represent; however, be aware that every TBI Guy or Girl is continuously recovering because recovery is not stagnant - it continues over time.
"This volume in my children's book series is created to bridge understanding gaps regarding disability awareness by pointing out the reality that TBI Guys and Girls are often "Dealin' with Bullies". "TBI Guy's Learnin' Lessons" book series shares voices and visualization emphasizing routine life skills and interactions through a positive lens. Through child readers, and their parents who read with, or to them, education can be heightened first by a household, then by a group of readers, and finally, even a community. It is my hope this series results in greater understanding for us all in referencing intellectual disabilities."
