Mr. Makens Verified

Matt Makens joined Channel 9 as weekend meteorologist in August 2007.[CR-LF][CR-LF]Before coming to WFTV-TV, he worked in Topeka and Wichita. While in Kansas, he covered such events as the tornado that hit southwest Lawrence and the Greensburg tornado that completely destroyed the small Kansas town.[CR-LF][CR-LF]A native of Castle Rock, Colo., he graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in atmospheric science. While in college, he taught an introductory class, publish research dealing with Rocky Mountain thunderstorm initiation, and worked his first job in television, as well as the chance to work in air pollution and wind energy.[CR-LF][CR-LF]He has Emmy nominations for his work in Central Florida and Kansas, and received an award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. He holds a seal of approval from the National Weather Association, and is twelfth in the country to earn the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation by the American Meteorological Society.[CR-LF][CR-LF]In his spare time, he works with Orange County Public Schools as a Read2Succeed mentor. He also enjoys aviation.
