Travers Mackel worked at WDSU as an intern, then began his on-air career at KTVE in Monroe, where he worked as a morning anchor and reporter. After two years, he moved east down Interstate 20 to Jackson, Miss., where he worked as a reporter at NBC affiliate WLBT. While in Mississippi, Mackel covered an assortment of news, from crime to politics to deadly tornadoes and hurricanes. His two most memorable stories were the WorldCom financial scandal and live coverage of the state's first execution by lethal injection in 15 years. Mackel was born and raised in the Lakefront area of New Orleans. He is a graduate of De La Salle High School and Loyola University. He finished Loyola with a degree in broadcast journalism and played shortstop on the baseball team.
