Cybercrime has increased over 200% this year with the event of COVID19, below we can take a look at the most current trends in cybercrime:
Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the choice of criminals, terrorists & money launderers and this threat was recently addressed by CYBERPOL at the US Senate.
Child Trafficking
The task force is investigating recent cases of children trafficking on the dark web and seen on social media.
Social Media Cyber-Psychological crime
Social media is seen to be spreading anxiety and increasing phychological harm to millions of victims. This includes videos of hate groups showing mass protests, riots, looting and fake news. Terrorist executions were also seen to be posted online in popular social media sites.
Covid19 cybercrime:
The task force will look into cases of scammers impersonating WHO & UN offering compensation and various fraudulent schemes purporting to be from or associated with Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO). Most of them circulate as e-mails, but there are also fake web sites and in some cases faxes and telephones are used. Many of these scams request detailed information and/or money from individuals, businesses or non-profit organizations with the promise that they will receive assistance, funds or other benefits in return.
Other scammers ask for registration fees for conferences allegedly sponsored by WHO and for hotel reservations, also with the promise of certain benefits. Another type of scam proposes employment opportunities with these organizations. These scams sometimes carry a copy of the official logo, and originate from or refer to e-mail addresses made to look closely like an official address.
