Impact of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) on Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure

As per International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2020, the registrations for electric vehicles soared in key markets despite the damage done by COVID-19. One of the most significant driving factors for EVs is that they are not dependent upon fossil fuels and contribute less to environmental pollution. As a result, governments of various countries are now taking the initiative to invest in electric vehicles to curb pollution in their country. For instance, the Indian government has shared their vision on 8th October 2021 to have EV sales of 30% private cars, 70% commercial vehicles, and 80% two-and three-wheelers by 2030.

With the rising demand for electric vehicles across the globe, the demand for EV infrastructure and its compliance with Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) is inevitable. As per the World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPO) 2020, China has filed most international patents followed by USA and Japan in 2018 and 2019.

Levels of Electric Vehicle's charging

Based on varying speed and power, there are three levels of charging for electric vehicles “ Level 1 (120V), Level 2 (240V), and Level 3 (DC rapid/fast/superchargers). Apart from levels, there are different standards for connectors such as CCS, Bharat EV Charging Standards AIS-138 (Part 1 and Part 2), CHAdeMO, GB EV Charging standards: GB 27930- 2015, etc.

• Level 1 is the basic charging level found everywhere, whether at home, workplace, or public places. In level 1 charging, EVs can be charged by connecting the charger to the wall outlet just like we charge our phone/laptop. It is the slowest charging level within an hour of charging, and the vehicle can go between 3-5 km.

• Level 2 is the most commonly used charging for electric vehicles. Like level 1, it can also be installed anywhere at home, workplace, or public places. It gives 12-80 miles of driving range per hour.

• Level 3 is the fastest charging for EVs as it uses Direct Current (DC). It charges at a speed of 3-20 miles per minute. As voltage is very high, level 3 charging is rarely seen at home. It is usually found in public places. However, if you want to install level 3 charging at home, it will cost you more than your EV.
