Drug Addictions Taking Lives of Millions

Posted 22 Apr-2022 11:19 AM by Back to Life | 380

Every year, millions of people's lives are ruined by drugs. It affects not just the individual who consumes it, but also those who are in close proximity to him or her.

India's National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority announced a 10.7% increase in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for the calendar year 2021, over the corresponding period in 2020. According to the National Survey on the Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India, opioids are used by 2.1 percent of India's population (2.26 crore people), including opium (or its derivatives such as poppy husk known as Doda/phukki), heroin, and pharmaceutical opioids. Illicit substances are projected to have killed about 7.5 lakh people worldwide in 2017, as per the Global Burden of Disease Study. India has lost an estimated 22,000 deaths, and the number is claimed to be swiftly rising.

However, the number of suicides in India as a result of drug and alcohol abuse has more than doubled in the last decade. In 2010, 3,343 suicides were reported, and in 2019, 7,860 suicides were reported. Individuals become so addicted to these substances that their lack of drugs causes them so many troubles that they end up taking their own lives.

It is considered that people use drugs because they desire to fix something about their lives, either for the benefit of their future or for the betterment of their lives, but they are unable to do so. Drugs are commonly used by young people to escape reality, to blend in, to escape boredom, or to experiment, which is insanity to ruin or destroy your life because of boredom. while the number of drug abusers, users, and drug-related deaths continues to rise year after year due to a variety of factors, including stress.

The consumption of narcotic substances in India has gone up significantly, ranging from traditional plant-based drugs like cannabis, cocaine, and heroin to synthetic drugs like tramadol. In recent years, India's heroin consumption has nearly doubled.

According to Dr. Rajat Ray who is the head of the Centre for Behavioural Sciences at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and the report's main author, India currently lacks a national or local monitoring mechanism for drug misuse. "Simply establishing treatment centres will not serve; millions of drug users in the community must be motivated, informed, and urged to seek treatment," he stated.

It is in the power of drug addicts to better their lives rather than drowning them or making them worse. Then rehabilitation or we can say drug de- addiction centre or alcohol de-addiction centre is the solution, which primarily assists drug and alcohol abusers in improving their lives and escaping their agony.
