MARY FITZGERALD

Mary Fitzgerald is a journalist based in Marseille, France

I am a writer, researcher and consultant specialising in the Euro-Mediterranean region with a particular focus on Libya. I have reported on and researched Libya since February 2011 and lived there in 2014. I am now based in Marseille in the south of France.

I have conducted research on Libya for International Crisis Group (ICG), the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and the European University Institute (EUI) among others. I have consulted for a number of international organisations working in Libya including in the areas of peace building, local governance, and civil society. I am an Associate Fellow at ICSR, King's College London and an Associate Research Fellow at ISPI in Milan.

I have worked on wider initiatives with UNESCO, the Anna Lindh Foundation, the British Council and other cultural organisations. I have a particular interest in memorialisation processes in post-conflict and divided societies and contributed to the 2020 UN Special Rapporteur report on memorialisation.

In 2021, I initiated and developed the Capital of Europe, Women of Europe project with the Friends of Europe think-tank, where we reinvented the Brussels metro map to pay tribute to women who have helped shape the continent past and present.

As a journalist, my work has appeared in publications including the Economist, Foreign Policy, the New Yorker, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, the Guardian and Monocle. I have also worked on a number of radio documentaries for the BBC, one of which - on post-conflict Northern Ireland - won a Gold Sony Radio Academy Award. I began my career reporting on Northern Ireland for domestic and international media, covering paramilitary feuds and the sectarianism that endured beyond the 1998 peace agreement. I spent seven years as a roving staff foreign correspondent for the Irish Times, reporting from more than 40 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. I am a former Laurence Stern fellow at the Washington Post.

I am a contributing author to "The Libyan Revolution and its Aftermath" an edited volume published by Hurst/Oxford University Press.

I have also worked as a media trainer and served on the jury of the 2015 Samir Kassir Awards which honour exceptional journalism across the Middle East and North Africa.
