Marvin worked in journalism in his native Suriname and the English-speaking Caribbean as a regional and international reporter, conquering five Caribbean journalism awards along the way. He also worked as communications consultant, providing media-related services to corporations and (grassroots) social organizations throughout the Caribbean.
He relocated to the Netherlands in 2012, where he founded AFRO Magazine, a news and opinion platform that tells the underreported stories from the local afro community.
He has diverted somewhat to education in recent years, running Weekend College and StudieMAX, educational support programs of the ROCvA, managing and coaching coaches, volunteers and interns, liaising with ROCvA management and municipality, as well as with parents and (grassroot) social organizations in Amsterdam Southeast.
Hokstam holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Marketing and Communications from the Bournemouth University, UK.
He is a member of the Black Members Council (BMC) of the (British) National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and European representative of the Association of Caribbean Mediaworkers (ACM).
