Me Biosciences, Inc., a biotechnology company developing the first objective, precision nutrition platform, has been awarded a U.S. Air Force Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract through AFWERX and the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to advance the development of these pivotal technologies.
Although there is a demand to increase the resilience and longevity of the warfighter, the most direct solution for achieving this, precision nutrition, is currently underutilized due to the difficulties of scaling a personalized approach to nutrition. As Chris Young, a transitioning Green Beret and former XO at 10th SFG(A) told our team, Our service members, and society at large, are overfed and undernourished. The undernourished operator could be thrust on a trajectory towards suboptimal physical and mental health, performance deficits, poor recovery following injury, and even chronic disease and disability.
With the SBIR grant, Me Biosciences strives to empower defense nutritionists and dietitians to scale their impact to the health and wellness of the soldiers in their care. Although the warfighter is incredibly resilient, the demands of military service are often such that the threshold of what the body can withstand while still maintaining optimal health and performance is exceeded.
"We are thrilled to be working with AFWERX and the U.S. Air Force on the development of our precision nutrition platform," stated CEO Jean-Paul O'Brien. "From performance and optimization to recovery and longevity, precision nutrition will likely become the most impactful health and wellness solution for airmen and civilians alike."
Me Biosciences is now eligible to pursue a Phase II contract with the Air Force, and the company is already in conversations with AFRL, Navy.
