Global Palladium Fund Forecasts Continued Investor Appetite for Key Green Economy Transition Metals

Against a backdrop of strong production growth for electric vehicles (EV) and expansion of clean energy sectors, investors are recalibrating their interests towards those metals most involved in delivering these two themes.

Increased government regulation and higher standards for environmental protection in Europe are seen as the major drivers behind the trend, reveals Global Palladium Fund, the specialist provider of physically-backed metal Exchange Traded Commodities, following a European investor roadshow last week.

"Government regulations and targets to decarbonize and transition to clean energy systems are driving significant demand for some specific metals like copper and nickel. We expect the trend towards decarbonizing the world to be long lasting and the impacts in the commodity space to be here for some time." - commented Hamad Ebrahim, London-based Head of Research at Global Palladium Fund.

Economists note the significant growth in demand for commodities critical to the clean energy transition, such as metals for developing wind farms, electric vehicles, solar panels and EV batteries, while benefiting suppliers in the sector.

Alex Stoyanov, Global Palladium Fund CEO, said: "Commodities are often grouped together by investors seeking broad exposure, but this misses the opportunity to take a view on some of the most exciting mega-trends developing in the world today, because the underlying drivers for different commodities are often unique. The most sophisticated investors tend to be more focused and timelier in their approach to specific commodity investments."

The International Energy Agency estimated earlier this year that 200 million tonnes of copper will be needed to meet Energy Transition demand globally, while only 700 million tonnes in total have been refined to date. Similarly, nickel is also benefiting from the huge growth in the electric vehicle space. According to current estimates, five million EV passenger vehicles are sold each year, compared to 90 million annual sales of passenger vehicles using internal combustion engines. As governments will ban petrol- or diesel-powered cars starting in 2030, the EV market will grow towards the latter figure.

Amcor, Coles, iQ Renew, Licella, LyondellBasell and Nestlé Findings Support Australian-First Advance

Licella, supported by Amcor, Coles, iQ Renew, LyondellBasell, and Nestlé, have released a report highlighting the potential for establishing a local circular economy for soft plastic, with a focus on difficult to mechanically recycle plastic such as food packaging.

Advanced recycling allows soft plastic waste, like confectionery wrappers and bread bags, to be turned back into oil, then made into new food-grade packaging in Australia. The study found that using the oil created from waste plastic, in the local plastic packaging supply chain, delivers a 64% CO2 reduction compared to crude oil.1

The study identified Altona in Victoria as the location best placed for an advanced recycling facility, given the area's existing infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities. It is an opportunity to establish Victoria, and Australia, as a leader in this emerging new industry.

If the new facility was constructed, it would provide a boost to local industry, with the potential to create over 300 new jobs in Victoria over the next five years. The facility could also contribute over $100 million a year to the Victorian economy.

The report comes as a result of a feasibility study that demonstrated a circular economy for plastic is not only possible, but is essential for Australia to meet its National Waste Policy commitments. With Australia's National Packaging Targets requiring industry to use an average of 50% recycled content in packaging by 2025, the demand for recycled content, especially food-grade plastic, is expected to grow significantly.2

The advanced recycling facility would be an Australian first if built and presents the opportunity to divert up to 120,000 tonnes, or 24%, of the waste plastics sent to landfill every year in Victoria alone.3 With over 500,000 tonnes of plastic going to landfill in Victoria each year1, the proposed facility would be an essential step towards a more sustainable future for plastic in Australia.

The proposed advanced recycling facility would use innovative Australian technology called Cat-HTR™ (Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor), a form of hydrothermal liquefaction technology developed by Licella.

If built, the proposed facility would initially process 20,000 tonnes per annum of plastic waste, producing 17,000 tonnes of oil a year, that could be used in the local plastic supply chain. The facility can be expanded to process 120,000 tonnes of plastic waste per annum, resulting in the production of nearly 100,000 tonnes of recycled food-grade plastics per year.

The system-wide transformation required for Australia to meet its plastic recycling targets needs local initiatives, such as those outlined in this report, to come to fruition. Collaboration across industry and government is essential to drive this change.

However, current CO2 levels in the atmosphere are already well into the danger zone and reducing emissions will not save the day. The solution – the only real solution – is to pull that carbon out of the atmosphere and get it where it will be put to good use. Where is that? All that excess carbon needs to go underground – in fact it is a vital component for healthy soil.

The excellent news is that to get the carbon into the soil does not require new technology or expensive research and special equipment. In fact, it is a totally natural part of how the system has evolved to optimize the many levels of life on this planet. Who is going to do the work of getting the carbon back in the soil where it has been seriously depleted by industrial agriculture and unmanaged animal grazing? It's a process most of us learned about early in school: photosynthesis. It is photosynthesis working with trillions of little creatures that live and flourish in every square inch of healthy soil that are crucial to restoring and maintaining the balance in our environment. Photosynthesis uses the energy of the sun to draw CO2 out of the air. The CO2 travels through plants and down into the roots. As part of the process, the plant gives off oxygen and produces sugars that travel down through the root structure. These sugars feed those trillions of microorganisms in the "living" soil. For our discussion, the key is that carbon is naturally deposited in the soil by this process – it has been pulled out of the air.

So, what went wrong?

Humans by nature are constantly looking for easier ways to do things. Easier of course is not always better. In the effort to grow more food more cheaply agriculture has become very industrialized and more and more dependent on adding manufactured chemical products. We have a very resilient system that has stayed in balance for centuries. Today, we are discovering that getting bigger and more specialized has reached the point of seriously diminishing returns. Heavy duty farm tilling equipment tearing away the natural integrity of the soil along with fertilizers, weed killers and insecticides are killing off the trillions of micro organisms essential to healthy soil. It is this destruction of soil that has created the non-sustainable place we find ourselves. Science is now realizing that healthy soil is the most important component of a healthy planet.

While some fear it could be too late, organizations like “Kiss the Ground” have formed with the mission of letting consumers, producers, farmers and ranchers know that there is a solution to the catastrophic path we have been traveling for a few generations. If this generation can shift course to simply get us “back to nature” we can save the world as we know it. Not only will it mitigate temperature rise and the effects of drought, healthy soil will restore the nutrient value of our foods. Plants will once again be able to pull all the nutrients out of the soil instead of needing increasing amounts of chemicals to thrive. Those trillions of little creatures that live and die in healthy soil regenerate its nutritional value for plants that can then pull a full nutrient load from the soil. While farmers may have a bit less yield, the nutritional quality of their produce increases and the cost of growing decreases (cost of added chemicals and possible need for more irrigation).

It also turns out that cows are not the problem. In fact with managed grazing, the cattle can aid the regeneration of soil health. If cattle are not allowed to “overgraze” an area, adequate ground cover can be maintained and the animal waste products provide a natural fertilizer adding nutrients directly to the soil. The key question you should have now is what can I do?

Here’s a scenario we can work on that can allows everyone to play a part in the solution to the dangerous situation we are in.

Seek out produce coming from farms practicing regenerative farming and insist on “organic” produce which is free of most hazardous chemicals. These farms should ideally utilize “no-till” or limited till cultivation, have diversified crop planting, maintain ground cover to help protect surface soil from heat and erosion and encourage diversification of species on the property. Regeneration of healthy soil – full of microorganisms, worms and mycorrhizal fungi – is our best and possibly only real path to restoring the balance and health of the planet. What’s the best part? There is NO downside. Food may be a bit more expensive during the transition to this as a standard of operation but it will have significantly better nutrient value leading to improved health. We don’t have to wait for new technology. We don’t have to make painful changes to how we live.

What’s the next step?

Picture a world where everyone is composting all of their appropriate food waste instead of putting it in the trash – restaurants and supermarkets too. Like trash collection, food waste or compost is picked up regularly. Compost centers finish composting process and transport it to areas where soil is being regenerated or to help maintain already healthy soil. This process can be monetized with land owners purchasing the compost instead of fertilizers and other chemicals for which there will be less need as soil health is regained.

This is the story we should write because it can be the #1 solution for restoring balance and health on a multitude of levels.

“Humanity is causing a rapid loss of biodiversity and, with it, Earth’s ability to support complex life. But the mainstream is having difficulty grasping the magnitude of this loss, despite the steady erosion of the fabric of human civilization” Professor Bradshaw says.

“In fact, the scale of the threats to the biosphere and all its lifeforms is so great that it is difficult to grasp for even well-informed experts.

“The problem is compounded by ignorance and short-term self-interest, with the pursuit of wealth and political interests stymying the action that is crucial for survival” he says.

Professor Paul Ehrlich of Stanford University says that no political or economic system, or leadership, is prepared to handle the predicted disasters, or even capable of such action.

“Stopping biodiversity loss is nowhere close to the top of any country’s priorities, trailing far behind other concerns such as employment, healthcare, economic growth, or currency stability.

“While it is positive news that President-elect Biden intends to reengage the US in Paris Climate accord within his first 100 days of office, it is a minuscule gesture given the scale of the challenge.

“Most economies operate on the basis that counteraction now is too costly to be politically palatable. Combined with disinformation campaigns to protect short-term profits it is doubtful that the scale of changes we need will be made in time” Professor Ehrlich says.

Professor Dan Blumstein from UCLA says the scientists are choosing to speak boldly and fearlessly because life literally depends on it.

“What we are saying might not be popular, and indeed is frightening. But we need to be candid, accurate, and honest if humanity is to understand the enormity of the challenges we face in creating a sustainable future.

“Without political will backed by tangible action that scales to the enormity of the problems facing us, the added stresses to human health, wealth, and well-being will perversely diminish our political capacity to mitigate the erosion of the Earth’s life-support system upon which we all depend.

“Human population growth and consumption continues to escalate, and we’re still more focused on expanding human enterprise than we are on devising and implementing solutions to critical issues such as biodiversity loss. By the time we fully comprehend the impact of ecological deterioration, it will be too late.

“Without fully appreciating and broadcasting the scale of the problems and the enormity of the solutions required, society will fail to achieve even modest sustainability goals, and catastrophe will surely follow” Professor Blumstein concludes.

The experts say their ‘perspective’ paper, which cites more than 150 studies, seeks to outline clearly and unambiguously the likely future trends in biodiversity decline, mass extinction, climate disruption, planetary toxification, all tied to human consumption and population growth to demonstrate the near certainty that these problems will worsen over the coming decades, with negative impacts for centuries to come. It also explains the impact of political impotence and the ineffectiveness of current and planned actions to address the ominous scale of environmental erosion.

[The Institution of Green Engineers (IGEN) &Varun Aditya Foundation] hosted [IGEN ENVIRONTHON], a World Record Attempt with 17 HOURS NON-STOP VIRTUAL CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENT BIO DIVERSITY.

[IGEN& VAF] jointly hosted the [IGEN ENVIRONTHON] at [ZOOM and Live in IGENSDGplus Youtube Channel] on [Aug 08, 2020] as part of Environment Day Celebration, with 10 other partnering organizations. The event witnessed a 17 Hours Non Stop Virtual Conference, with many remarkable programmes pertaining to Bio-diversity simultaneously, in an earnest attempt to execute world record. 20 speakers from 20 different countries around the world presented their contributions on environmental activities. The programme had many awe-inspiring sessions like an International Panel Discussion on Green Environment, a Panel Discussion on Green Talks with Ashish, two other national panel discussions, recording of one Kids Panel Discussion on BioDiversity by IGEN YGIA teams, five Awakening Sessions by five big environmental contributors, five online competitions with many enthusiastic participants and also had 4 renowned personalities as chief guests. The entire programme was witnessed by nearly 15,000 viewers @ IGENSDGplus Youtube Channel.

IGEN ENVIRONTHON2020 kick started at 7am with a welcome program by KPRIET sangamam team followed by a Kids Panel discussion on Biodiversity by IGEN YGIA Kids and morning concluding remarks by Shri.APJMJ Sheik Dawood (Grandnephew- Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam) where he presented the progress of Abdul Kalam Social Forest work towards Green Environment.

ThiruK.Pandiarajan, Honble Minister for Tamil official,Tamil Development& Archaeology, Government of TamilNadu, inaugurated IGEN ENVIRONTHON 2020 and delivered the inaugural address. He presented his views on Environment Biodiversity and stressed the importance of sustainable implementation through local administration, mentioning his own Avadi Constituency.

The Guest of Honor, Dr. Sowmya Anbumani, President – Pasumai Thayagam addressed the participants on the global importance of Biodiversity and provided her suggestions for implementation. Another Guest of Honor, Padmashri R.M Vasagam Board of Governor IGEN, Former Vice Chancellor, Anna University, presented his experience on environmental work and inaugurated 20S20C (Inauguration of 20 Speakers from 20 countries).

The program continued with breathtaking presentations by 20 speakers from 20 global countries on their contribution of work towards environmental activities along with one international panel discussion on SDG. IGEN ENVIRONTHON competitions (Elocution, Tree Challenge, Waste to Wealth, Biodiversity Challenge, Drawing) were also held simultaneously and the final contestants presented their outcome with the participants and judges. The evening program saw an interesting National panel discussion on “Green talk with Ashish” which stressed on the need of green society and boom of upcoming green jobs.

Four exciting Awakening sessions started at noon and ended by evening. Notable environment contributors Shri.Sundarajan, PoovulaginNanbargal, Shri Orissa Balu (Siva Balasubramani), Prof Sultan Ahmed Ismail, Director, Eco-science Research Foundation, ShriS.Sathish – Forest Range Officer, TamilNadu forest Department and Shri. VaaManikandan, Founder, Nisaptham Trust presented their contributions each on environmental concerns. Two more national panel discussions on green environment with 10 experts were also held.

The World Record Attempt, 17 Hours Non Stop Virtual Conference on Environment Bio Diversity, came to an amazing halt with a Valedictory address by Julian James Dharmapalan, Managing Director: Tor-Con Construction Toronto Canada.

The program ended @ 00.05am with concluding remarks by IGEN Ramesh and a heartfelt note of thanks by IGEN ENVIRONTHON 2020 Organising Secretary, IGEN Gokul.
