recommends drivers use even more care than normal as California
counties re-open. Following the state's shelter-in-place order, the
number of vehicular accidents dropped. As counties re-open, the number
of accidents could rise.
The Road Ecology Center at the University of California, Davis found
that the state's shelter-in-place order on March 20 cut the number of
traffic accidents (in addition to injuries and even deaths related to
traffic accidents) by roughly 50 percent. On May 8, California moved into œStage 2 of the state's œResilience
Roadmap. In this stage, œlower-risk workplaces have opened, such as
some œretail, manufacturing, offices, outdoor museums, and limited
personal services in some counties. This could lead to more people out on the road, thus increasing the number of vehicular accidents. œThere is no upside to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fewer people out on
California's roadways has led to a welcome and significant decrease in
vehicular accidents and fatalities. The opening up of more California
counties and businesses is a positive development, as it shows that
we're one step closer to returning to our lives. However, vigilance is
necessary. We must be vigilant to stay safe from COVID-19, yes, but we
must also be vigilant against other risky behaviors, too. With fewer
people on the road, it might feel exciting to drive fast. However,
˜taking care of each other' in public is about more than just wearing a
mask. By driving with the utmost care, wearing a mask while in public,
and other safety-promoting behaviors, we can all do our part for one
