There are so many windows treatment options even among shades and blinds, that one may be tempted to go with more than one style for a single window. There is no set rule that all the rooms of the house or even a single room should have a uniform window treatment and one can mix and match and use their imagination. Window treatments are a large investment and are vital to completing the look of the room, hence one must indulge themselves, but do it smartly as you will be living with the consequences of the decision you take. Or it may become an expensive mistake to rectify in the short term. Here are a few suggestions on how you can mix and match shutters and blinds or shades.

- Layering must be done astutely

Two window treatments layered on a single window can look classy, but they shouldn't overpower the wall or become the centerpiece of the room. Layering should be done with varied textures while maintaining function. You cannot layer plantation shutters with windows or blinds. However, outdoor louvered shutters can be combined with Venetian blinds or Roman shades with elan. This will give the room privacy and light control in ample measures.

- One treatment per room

While you can combine window dressings, the same style must be repeated across all the windows of the room. So, if you are combining shutters and blinds, then you must continue with that style across all the windows of that room. This rule applies even to large rooms and open floor plan homes.  

- Different treatments for appeal

It makes design sense to have a uniform design across the house, though it is not necessary. However, if a group of windows is facing one side of the house, then it will look appealing and uniform to the outsider if they have the same design. Especially in the case of apartments, people often identify the house from the window treatment so it would be cohesive to repeat the window treatment, especially on the street-facing side. Hence, you must decide between shades and blinds and repeat it across the rooms on the side facing the street.

- Interspersing with Shutters

An easy way to maintain curb appeal is by layering all windows of the house with shutters. You can opt for neutral-looking plantation shutters or blend them with different styles for individual rooms. Traditionally, shutters go well with sheer curtains, but if you live in a cold region or where there is heavy sunshine, then you can opt for shutters and blinds or shades for temperature and light control naturally. It is quite common to mix faux wood blinds and plantation shutters and if the house has arches, one can go for sunburst shutter arches above faux wooden blinds.

Whatever you choose, just coordinate the colors of the shutters and blinds, and make sure that the window can bear the fixtures that come with shades and blinds.
