Dr. Scheinin is a respected, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon whose clinical interests include transplantation, bloodless cardiovascular surgery, high-risk coronary artery bypass surgery, and arrhythmia surgery. He is the Surgical Director of the Advanced Pulmonary Failure and Lung Transplantation Program at Mount Sinai Health system

Together with Mount Sinai's Departments of Cardiovacular and Thoracic  Surgery and Department of Medicine, Advanced Lung Disease Program at Mount Sinai brings together teams that include pulmonologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists who specialize in pulmonary hypertension, radiologists, rheumatologists, and other related specialists to provide groundbreaking care for patients with complex medical conditions.

Licensed to practice medicine in New York, Dr. Scheinin also serves as System Director of Lung transplantation of the Mount Sinai Health System and a Professor in the Departments of Cardiovacular and Thoracic surgery.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the International Society of Heart and Lung transplantation.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Scheinin graduated with his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 1986. He performed his residency in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in 1991, his fellowship in transplant surgery at Texas Heart Institute in 1992, and an additional residency in thoracic surgery at Texas Heart Institute in 1994.

 

Specializing in surgical procedures, the doctor is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

For over a decade, blood conservation and bloodless cardiovascular surgery have been a clinical interest of Dr. Scheinin. He is the recipient of the prestigious 2015 Kathleen J. Sazama Award from the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management for outstanding leadership in advancing patient rights and his consistent dedication to progress in the field of blood management.

Among other diverse accolades include Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014, 2015), Patients' Choice Award (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018), and On-Time Doctor Award (2016, 2018).

Happily married, he and his wife, Andi, have three children: Lauren, Max, and Samantha.
