As a designer and seller of sit stand desks, we'd recommend people who tend to sit too much to use a smart sit/stand desk. However, if you are otherwise active, standing desks might not be necessary for you.
Many studies show that using a sit-stand desk (also called a standing desk) consistently offers many health benefits.
A height adjustable desk can help you relieve back and neck discomfort, lower your blood sugar levels and boost your metabolism.
However, like these articles pointed out, there is some truth that the media could have oversold these desks, that is caused by improper use of these desks. If you under-use ergonomic based desks, you obviously would receive limited benefits. And when you over-use it by standing too much, it could lead to muscle cramps or leg fatigue.
So how do you balance between sitting and standing throughout your day?
The fact about these smart desks is that it is probably the only tool that can help you to move during your day at work, without disrupting whatever you are doing.
Why is constant movement is essential?
Our body isn't designed to remain in the same position for an extended period of time.
Hunching over a computer, typing furiously and staring at the screen could cause potential muscle imbalances.
Over time, your underused muscles will shorten and weaken. This leads to neck pain and backaches that many office workers are suffering from.
So how do you decide if you should spend on a smart desk? We suggest 3 things:
1.Are you required to sit for long periods of time at your job?
2.Do you have a health condition that requires you to be more active?
3.If you do get a standing desk, do you have the determination to use it regularly?
Are you required to sit for long periods at your job?
Those who work all through the night (lawyers or accountants) or who have to sit in front of multiple screens (traders or designers) find smart desks to be their perfect solution.
Aside from the musculoskeletal problems (back or neck pain of prolonged sitting), your heart and pancreas and other parts are also suffering in silence.
If this the case for you, the activity and ergonomics introduced by standing work desks could help you tremendously. This desk will help you to sit or stand while moving all your screens and papers along with your activity while keeping you active throughout the day. Desks with these ergonomic features will also help to improve your posture:
· Adjustable arms for screens. You can adjust your screen so that your eye is at the top ½ of the screen and your head is slightly tilted forward to your screen. This will prevent you from hunching forward and your neck from straining.
· Tiltable screen. It is important to keep our eyes, neck, and shoulder comfort, and avoid screen glare.
