PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel and a major producer of platinum and copper, led by Vladimir Potanin, hosted its annual Capital Markets Day.

The Company's environmental program has reached a number of new milestones in Kola division, whereas the delivery on the Sulphur Programme 2.0 in Norilsk division is on track. Nornickel has been successful at ramping up capex this year, which is expected to increase by more than 50% from 2020.

Nornickel's metals basket is absolutely critical to support the global transition to a net zero world, and its core growth projects are on track and long-term production volume targets have been raised. The management's strategic goal is to navigate Nornickel to the premier league of the future green economy and become a leader in sustainability. This translates into compliance with the national technical and legal requirements, and adherence to the industry's highest ESG standards.

Expansion of capital investments with a clear focus on ESG

Nornickel has updated its long-term CAPEX program through the year 2021-2030, raising it by USD 6bn to USD 35bn, of which about USD 6bn will be allocated to environmental projects. Another major revision is the USD 8bn investment into energy infrastructure modernization of renewable energy assets, high-voltage transmission lines, and investments in additional projects in production and transportation of natural gas. Another USD 2bn will go towards the maintenance and upgrade of existing assets, capital repairs and new equipment.

Nornickel has raised its long-term strategic ambitions for 2030+ of metals production, aiming for 25-35% growth in nickel volumes, 50-60% in PGMs and 25-35% in copper. The Company also targets to gain a substantial market share in the fast-growing battery segment through supply agreements and deeper integration into the European battery value chain, including research and partnerships.

Vladimir Potanin, Nornickel's President, commented: "We have started to roll-out a permafrost monitoring system in Norilsk and have committed to a major renovation of our energy infrastructure. In addition to a better management of climate change related risks, we anticipate to get significant carbon dioxide emission cuts as the efficiency of our power generating equipment should improve.

"On the social front, we have committed to a number of programs, which aim to transform the city of Norilsk into a modern city with high living standards. Over business cycles, our metals basket has shown its natural resilience to changes in underlying demand for commodities. Our course forward is towards integration into the new green economy. Higher focus on the global climate agenda drives up the demand for our key metals and reconfirms our strategy to grow production. I believe that transformational investments will result in higher value for Nornickel and its shareholders, combining industry-leading profitability and top-notch ESG standards."

Source: https://www.newswire.com/news/nornickel-2021-annual-capital-markets-day-leading-the-transition-to-a-21566068

The artist personally presented a collection in the main hall of UN Geneva's Palais des Nations of 170 large artistic portraits of over 100 representatives of different peoples of the world, photographed in authentic national costumes in their habitat. A big part of the exhibition is dedicated to the indigenous communities of Russia's Siberia and the Far East.

Tatyana Valovaya, Director-General of UN Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to UN Geneva, and other officials took part in the exhibition opening ceremony. Indigenous people of Taimyr (including those depicted in Alexander Khimushin's photos) also attended the ceremony. Heiro, the Taimyr Song and Dance Ensemble of the Peoples of the North, an honored Russian folk-art band, performed during the ceremony.

Nornickel shares the goal of the "World in Faces" project — to tell the world a story about the indigenous communities, about everyday life, customs, traditions. The programme will run until 2024 and includes support for traditional activities, protection of the indigenous habitat, and financing of new homes, hospitals, museums, etc.

"Nornickel has always interacted with the indigenous peoples of the Russian North in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual assistance.

A key driver of the higher trade turnover with Spain was the capital city's non-resource and non-energy exports, which reached USD 28.10 million in the first half of this year, up 40.8% year-on-year and double the number for January-June 2019.

A breakdown of exports shows stable increases in both industrial and agro-industrial exports. According to the Mosprom Center, Moscow significantly boosted exports of industrial goods to Spain in the first half of this year, including electrical devices, communication equipment, low-voltage electrical distribution equipment, and semiconductors. Other popular exported goods included plastic and rubber products, communication equipment, machines, makeup and skincare products, and clothing. Industrial exports in the first half of 2021 reached USD 12.18 million, up 25.4% year-on-year and up 30.5% from the same period of 2019.

"We are also seeing a surge in Spanish demand for Moscow's agro-industrial products. Local companies exported USD 15.92 million in agro-industrial products to Spain in the first half of 2021, up 55.3% from January-June 2020 and up an emphatic 249.1% from the same period of 2019," added Alexander Prokhorov.

The Mosprom Center, a branch of Moscow's department of investment and industrial policy, provides personalized support for local industrial and agribusiness exporters.

The experts at the Center analyze target markets for the capital's manufacturers.

MMC Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest refined nickel and palladium producer, has retained leadership in the global metals and mining industry in terms of industrial health and safety. The injury rate has fallen to a record low level. The Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) reduced further to 0.21 per 1,000,000 man-hours in 2020 from 0.32 in 2019. The total number of occupational accidents decreased 32% year-on-year.

Vladimir Potanin, Nornickel's President, commented on the Company's sustainability efforts in 2020: "The challenges we faced in 2020 confirmed our strategic adherence to the principles and goals of sustainable development, in particular, the principles of the UN Global Compact. We managed to pursue our employees' health and safety as a priority amid the COVID-19 pandemic and effectively adapt our business processes to the new reality. A quick and well-coordinated response to the unprecedented fuel spill in Norilsk helped to prevent a major environmental disaster in the Arctic. The Company has learned its lessons, improved its risk management system and set new goals to mitigate its environmental impact."

Zero injuries remains one of the Company's top strategic goals, with a performance on injuries being among key KPIs with a 20% weight set for the management remuneration. The Company employs strict industrial safety rules, with 17 corporate standards having being developed to mitigate safety-related risks. Since 2014, an annual independent assessment of Nornickel's safety culture has been carried out by an independent consultant. The overall safety culture score is assigned based on the Bradley Curve. Over the past seven years, the Company's assessment has improved from 1.4 to 3.0 points (on a 1-4 points scale, where four indicates strong safety culture).

The Company has maintained social support for its employees at a high standard, having avoided redundancies during the pandemic of COVID-19 and allocating a total of US $161M to fight the outbreak. Moreover, the average monthly salary in 2020 increased by almost 11%, remaining one of the highest in the industry in Russia. The share of employees covered by collective bargaining agreements increased to 93.7% in 2020 (versus 83% in 2019).

Nornickel has significantly upgraded its risk management system, including climate change risks, improved the organisational structure and introduced more stringent environmental KPIs for the management. In particular, annual KPIs for 2021 have been revised to include zero environmental incidents, whereas long-term KPIs are currently being designed to include improvements in environmental performance and reduction of the impact on climate change.

More details about Nornickel's sustainable performance can be found in the Company's annual sustainability report for 2020, available on its internet site. In addition, a special white paper covering its industrial incidents has been published. The paper describes the causes of the incidents, measures taken to eliminate the consequences, rehabilitation efforts, as well as subsequent organizational changes aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

Source URL - https://www.newswire.com/news/nornickel-reports-progress-in-sustainable-development-performance-in-21377744
