Fully restored 1959 Corvette Convertible Roars Off for $82,600 (Canadian) in Miller & Miller Auction

New Hamburg, ON, Canada, July 2, 2022 -- A powder blue, fully restored 1959 Chevrolet Corvette convertible sped off for $82,600 and a Canadian Red Indian Aviation Motor Oil sign from the 1930s changed hands for for $47,200 in Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd.’s online-only Petroliana, Railroadiana & Advertising auction held on June 18th. Overall, the auction grossed $628,674.

All prices in this report are in Canadian dollars and include an 18 percent buyer’s premium.

The ‘59 Corvette was originally a New Mexico car, later purchased in Canada in 1979 by Joe Byway, whose collection headlined the auction. Joe stored the car until 1985 and then commissioned Dave Harrison with a restoration. It was a meticulously maintained, rust-free car. Not all numbers matched but the car boasted a correct 283 c.i. 230 hp V8 engine.

The Canadian Red Indian Aviation Motor Oil single sided porcelain sign from the 1930s was a seldom seen sign promoting Red Indian's Aviation brand of motor oil. The vibrant cobalt blue and blood red graphics popped against the white ground. The 26 inch by 72 inch sign retained the original flanged mounting ends and was graded 8.75 for condition.

The Joe Byway collection featured petroliana (gas station collectibles), railroadiana and advertising tins and signs. Some toys were also sold. “The top fifty lots met or exceeded our expectations, and the market for top-tier petroliana continues on an upward trajectory, said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd., adding, “All the vehicles sold at or above estimates.”

The vehicles he refers to included a 1937 Ford Model 78 Deluxe convertible sedan, a rare open-air car with rear doors and the original paint (except for the front fenders). The restoration included new upholstery, carpet and convertible top. The car was powered by the correct flathead V8 engine and the odometer showed just 10,175 miles ($32,450).

Also sold was a 1972 GMC 1500 Custom pickup truck with 49,138 miles on the odometer. The rust-free truck featured a long box, three-speed manual transmission, the original interior and correct original 307ci V8 engine (undetailed). The restoration, by Ernie Droogers, included new paint, headliner and a re-chromed rear bumper ($30,680).

Following are additional highlights from the 299-lot auction, one in which 368 users registered to bid online, via MillerandMillerAuctions.com and LiveAuctioneers.com, and placed a combined 5,996 bids. One hundred percent of lots sold, and 86 percent of the top 50 lots exceeded estimate. “It was a feel-good sale that energized the market,” Mr. Miller said.

Among the railroadiana lots, bigger didn’t necessarily mean better. A collection of rare badges rose to a combined $18,800, led by a group of six Canadian National Railway badges from the 1930s that blasted through their $300-$500 estimate to bring $7,080. Five of the nickel-plated brass and sterling silver badges were marked, “J.R. Gaunt & Son, Montreal, Made in England.”

An Eco-Meter 150 "Clockface" Gasoline Pump (Canadian, 1930s), 82 inches tall by 22 inches wide and painted to Shell colors, with a reproduction globe, went to a determined bidder for $29,500. Also, a single-sided porcelain Red Indian Motor Oil sign (Canadian, 1930s), with a raised border, 26 inches tall by 72 inches wide, graded 8.75, hit $24,780.

A General Motors double-sided porcelain sign (American, 1950s), reading “Pontiac, Buick, GM Truck”, 96 inches tall by 72 inches wide, with atomic age design, consisting of six pieces (three sections per side), realized $23,600; and a double-sided porcelain Supertest Gasoline Service Station sign (Canadian, 1930s), 48 inches in diameter and graded 8.75 on each side for condition, with scattered losses and chips, made $18,880.

A double-sided porcelain White Rose Gasoline “Slate Boy” sign (Canadian, 1940s), with the iconic “Boy and Slate” graphics, 48 inches in diameter, graded 8.75/8.5, found a new home for $23,600; while a White Rose Service Station sign (also Canadian, circa 1940s), a three-piece set including two horizontal panels and a rare 36-inch diameter round sign, each piece single sided porcelain, blew past its $8,000 high estimate to finish at $18,880.

A double-sided porcelain Dominion Royal Tires sign (Canadian, 1940s), marked “P&M Orillia” on the lower edge of each side, 65 inches tall by 70 inches wide and graded 8.5 on each side, garnered $10,620. Also, a Service Station Equipment Clearvision double gasoline pump (Canadian, 1930s), 127 inches tall, having an older restoration to Sunoco colors, reproduction globes and one aluminum and one steel bonnet, went for $21,240.

An Imperial 3-Star Gasoline double-sided porcelain service station sign (Canadian, 1940s), retained in the original porcelain oval ring, 41 inches by 60 inches, graded 9.5 and 9.25, rang up $7,080; while a Texaco Gasoline double-sided porcelain service station sign (Canadian, 1957), marked, "P&M Orillia 57" on the lower edge of one side, 5 feet in diameter, graded 8.75 on both sides, with minor scattered porcelain losses, hit $6,490.

Dazzling 9.22-Carat Diamond Ring Sells for $70,800 (Canadian) in Miller & Miller's June 11th Auction

New Hamburg, ON, Canada, June 18, 2022 -- A dazzling platinum diamond ring featuring a 9.22-carat center stone and two baguette shoulder stones slipped onto a new finger for $70,800, and a circa 1991 Rolex Submariner watch with a solid 18kt yellow gold case and bracelet brought $43,660 in an online-only Watches & Jewels auction held June 11th by Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd.

Prices quoted in this report are in Canadian dollars and include an 18 percent buyer’s premium.

The diamond ring boasted VS2 clarity and M color, and was accompanied by a certificate of appraisal from Gem Scan of Toronto. It sold within estimate, as did the Rolex Submariner, which had an Oyster bracelet and 40mm case that were the size one would expect from a Submariner, but with the added weight and feel of gold on the wrist, its presence was even more impressive.

“Lab created diamonds and their effect on the market for natural diamonds remains a popular topic of discussion in the jewelry industry,” said Justin Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. “There is no question that a low-cost supply of lab created diamonds has affected the lower end of the market, but for larger, high-quality investment-grade diamonds, their availability seems to have had minimal impact. This was proven when the 9.22-carat diamond ring sold for $70,800.”

Wristwatches in the auction included rare and desirable models from Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Piaget, IWC and Blancpain and Accutron., The selection of jewelry included rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. American railroad pocket watches were made by Waltham, Illinois and Hamilton, among others.

“The market for untouched examples of highly sought-after Rolex and Omega models continues its upward trajectory, whereas prices for dress models appear to be leveling out,” Mr. Miller observed. “This is a trend that we have been monitoring closely for the past twelve months.”

Following are additional highlights from the auction, which contained 191 lots and posted an overall gross of $381,287. A little more than 250 registered bidders combined to place 4,622 total bids online, through LiveAuctioneers.com and the Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. website (MillerandMillerAuctions.com). Phone and absentee bids were also taken.

Certainly one of the surprise lots of the sale was a 1960 Enicar Sherpa Graph Mark 1A Swiss chronograph with a stainless-steel case and band and featuring the rare ‘gladius’ hands, utilizing the iconic Valjoux 72 chronograph movement. The wristwatch was expected to bring $7,000-$10,000, but in the end it more than doubled even the high estimate when it finished at $22,420.

“Ten years ago, one could have acquired an Enicar Sherpa Graph for around $1,500,” Mr. Miller said. “One of the factors contributing to this appreciation was the fact that prices for Rolex Daytona chronographs have gone crazy, and the Sherpa Graph uses the same movement – the Valjoux 72. Comparatively, it remains a bargain.”

Perhaps as no surprise, Rolex watches, a time-tested hit with collectors and fashion-conscious watch-wearers alike, dominated the list of top lots. A few of the better performers included these:

- A circa 2001 Rolex Datejust Pearlmaster (Ref. 80319), featuring a 29mm 18kt white gold case with a colorful factory blue diamond dial and domed diamond bezel ($22,420).

- A Rolex Submariner (Ref. 16613), with 18kt yellow gold and stainless steel band and 40mm case, two-tone oyster band, box, pamphlets and hang tag, 139 grams ($18,880).

- A circa 1970 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513), 40mm, with box and original warranty card, a “purpose built” watch coveted by wearers for its enduring style and design ($17,110).

A 1960s-era Swiss Patek Philippe Calatrava watch (Ref. 3542), 18kt yellow gold with a nice crocodile strap, stamped for 18kt gold on the inner caseback and inside lugs, blew past its $6,000 high estimate to finish at $11,800. Also, a circa 1980 Piaget C701 Polo watch (Ref. 15661), featuring a solid 18kt gold case and bracelet and powered by a quartz movement (that, for its time, was the pinnacle of luxury), recently serviced and refinished, changed hands for $11,210.

A Cartier stamped rose and white gold lady’s hand-assembled bangle bracelet with a fold-over clasp and a bright polish finish, professionally modified to include cross-intersecting bands of diamonds set in white gold, was offered without reserve and went for $7,080. The cross love bracelet contained a total of 140 bead set round brilliant cut diamonds weighing a total 1.14ct.

Returning to Rolexes, a circa 1987 Rolex Explorer II wristwatch (Ref. 16550), featuring a 40mm stainless steel case with a 24-scale bezel for use as a second time zone function, water-resistant to 100 meters, found a new owner for $11,210; while a circa 1979 Rolex Datejust, a traditional dress watch to which a blue rubber strap was added, to give it a punch of fun, with the original Rolex clasp to round out the look, 36mm, reached $5,015. The watch was serviced in January.

A Swiss Alfred Lugrin 14kt yellow gold minute repeating triple date chronograph dating to the 1890s, stamped for 14kt gold on each inside cover and with a movement marked “53863”, went to a determined bidder for $6,490. Also, a 1999 Omega 18kt DeVille co-axial escapement watch with an 18kt white gold case and deployment clasp and leather Omega band, #927 of a limited edition of 999, stamped for 18kt gold on the inner caseback, rear lugs and clasp, made $5,015.

A 1950s Breitling RCAF single pusher chronograph watch featuring the Valjoux Caliber 23 movement, stainless steel case and leather strap, and stamped “Breitling Watch Co., Swiss” on the movement and inner caseback, scoffed at its $1,800 high estimate to finish at $5,015; while a 1990s Blancpain ladies’ Villeret calendar moonphase wristwatch with an 18kt yellow gold and stainless steel band, weighing 57 grams and the case 26mm in diameter, hammered for $4,425.

The 300-lot auction will be headlined by the Joe Byway collection of petroliana (gas station collectibles), railroadiana and advertising. “This is a sale of two collections: Joe’s petroliana, along with his father’s lifetime collection of railroadiana,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd. “Together it represents 90 years of collecting and two generations of ownership.”

Joe continued the stewardship of his father’s railroadiana collection, while continuing to procure automobilia and petroliana for himself. He built on what Arch started, sharing his father’s passion for preserving history. One of Joe’s greatest joys was finding something new for his museum. These items will now be sold to the next generation of collectors.

Railroadiana includes signs, lithographs, lanterns and other historical objects from Grand Trunk Railway (GTR), Canadian National Railway (CNR) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Petroliana and automobilia includes signs and tins from Red Indian, White Rose, B/A, Texaco, Sunoco, Imperial Oil, General Motors and Dominion Royal, among others.

“All of Joe’s signs, gas pumps, oil cans and even cars were found within a 50-mile radius of his house,” Mr. Miller said. “He acquired them before they were coveted by enthusiasts, starting in the 1960s. Joe’s collection was a secret to most of the world, even to neighbors. Old collections like this - found in primary sources - simply aren’t out there, and we’re thrilled to offer this one.”

The ’59 Corvette was originally a New Mexico car, but was later purchased in St. Thomas, Ontario by Joe Byway in 1979. Joe stored the car until 1985 and then commissioned Dave Harrison with the restoration. It remains a meticulously maintained, rust-free, running driving car. The car features a correct 283 CI 230 HP V8 engine. (est. $45,000-$60,000).

The single-sided porcelain Red Indian Aviation Motor Oil sign (Canadian, 1930s) is a rare sign promoting Red Indian's Aviation motor oil. The vibrant cobalt blue and blood red graphics pop against the white ground. It retains the original flanged mounting ends and rear tabs and is 26 inches tall by 72 inches wide, graded 8.75. (est. $40,000-$45,000).

The 1937 Ford Model 78 Deluxe convertible sedan is a rare open-air car with rear doors and the original paint (except the front fenders). The restoration includes new upholstery, carpet and convertible top. The dash has been professionally re-grained. It’s powered by the correct flathead V8 engine. The odometer shows 10,175 miles (est. $25,000-$30,000).

The Eco-Meter 150 "Clockface" Gasoline Pump (Canadian, 1930s.) is tagged, "Eco-Meter Gasoline Dispenser Manufactured by Service Station Equipment Co. Ltd. Toronto and Winnipeg". The 82 inch tall by 22 inch wide pump is painted to Shell colors and has a reproduction globe. The sight glass cylinder and dials are cracked (est. $15,000-$20,000).

There’s another noteworthy vintage vehicle in the auction. It’s a 1972 GMC 1500 Custom pickup truck with 49,138 miles on the odometer. It features a long box and 3-speed manual transmission. The rust-free truck boasts its original interior and correct original 307ci V8 engine (undetailed). The restoration includes new paint (est. $20,000-$25,000).

A 1930s Service Station Equipment Co., Ltd. (Toronto) Canadian double gasoline pump, Clearvision Model No. 700, an older restoration to Sunoco colors, 127 inches tall, with reproduction globes, should ring up $17,000-$20,000. Also, a General Motors double-sided porcelain sign (American 1950s), 96 inches tall by 72 inches wide, with atomic age design, consisting of six pieces (three sections per side) is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

A single-sided porcelain Red Indian Motor Oil sign (Canadian, 1930s), featuring a raised border and measuring 26 inches tall by 72 inches wide, graded 8.75 for condition, is expected to fetch $15,000-$20,000; while a double-sided porcelain Supertest Gasoline Service Station sign (Canadian, 1930s), 48 inches in diameter and graded 8.75 on each side for condition, with scattered losses and chips, should gavel for $10,000-$12,000.

A double-sided porcelain White Rose Gasoline “Slate Boy” sign (Canadian, 1940s), featuring the iconic “Boy and Slate” graphics, 48 inches in diameter and graded 8.75/8.5, has an estimate of $15,000-$20,000; while a White Rose Service Station sign (also Canadian, 1940s), a three-piece set including two horizontal panels and a rare 36-inch diameter round sign, each piece single sided porcelain, should sell for $6,000-$8,000.

A double-sided porcelain Dominion Royal Tires sign (Canadian, 1940s), marked “P&M Orillia” on the lower edge of each side, 65 inches tall by 70 inches wide and graded 8.5 on each side, is estimated to bring $8,000-$12,000. Also, a double-sided porcelain neon sign for Philco Radio (American, 1940s), each side with a backlit glass panel, addressed to the original store (“Bustin Electric”), graded 8.5 and 8, should achieve $6,000-$8,000.

Two Canadian Vulcanizer 10-gallon visible gasoline pumps, both 120 inches tall by 22 inches wide, have estimates of $5,000-$6,000. One is from the 1920s and sports the original tinted glass cylinder. The other, from the 1930s, has the original cylinder, which is cracked and glued. Each is painted to Supertest colors and has a reproduction globe.

An early 20th century American 12-seat railway station bench made from quarter-sawn oak, tagged, “Frost’s Veneer Seating Company, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, New York” on each side, should rise to $2,000-$3,000. Also, a single-sided painted wood New York Central Train schedule board (Canadian, 1920s), possibly from the St. Thomas Railway Station, with painted tin information plates, 82 ½ inches tall, should hit $2,000-$3,000.

- A circa 1970 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513), 40 mm, with box and original warranty card. “If you question the iconic legacy of the Submariner, call your local Rolex dealer and ask how many they have in stock,” Mr. Miller said (est. $17,500-$20,000).

- A Rolex Submariner (Ref. 16618) with 18kt yellow gold and stainless-steel case and band, two-tone Oyster band, box, pamphlets and hang tag. The case is 40mm in diameter and the gross weight of the assembled watch is 139 grams (est. $11,000-$13,000).

A stamped 18kt yellow gold lady’s custom-made diamond solitaire engagement ring featuring one claw-set, 4.08-carat princess cut diamond (Color: L, Clarity: SI-1, Cut: Good), with a high polish finish, should realize $35,000-$45,000. Also, a platinum custom-made pendant featuring ten claw-set marquise-shaped diamonds and 96 other diamonds (for a total diamond weight of 13.00 carats), plus one claw-set, 2.04-carat natural ruby, is expected to bring $16,000-$19,000.

A circa 1996 Breguet Classique Swiss watch (Ref. 3137) with an elegant 19kt yellow gold case and a dial featuring a power-reserve indicator and phases and age of the moon, plus the original box, has a pre-sale estimate of $30,000-$40,000. Also, a Swiss Patek Philippe Calatrava watch with an 18kt white gold case and a Patek Philippe strap with an 18kt gold clasp, is expected to fetch $25,000-$30,000. Back to Rolexes, a circa 2001 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Pearlmaster watch (Ref. 80319), featuring a 29mm 18kt gold case with factory diamond dial and bezel, plus a blue diamond dial, should make $22,000-$27,000; while a circa 1987 Rolex Explorer II wristwatch (Ref. 16550), featuring a 40mm stainless steel case with a 24-scale bezel for use as a second time zone function, water-resistant to 100 meters, has a pre-sale estimate of $12,000-$15,000.

A circa 1980 Piaget C701 Polo watch (Ref. 15661), featuring a solid 18kt gold case and bracelet and powered by a quartz movement (that, for its time, was the pinnacle of luxury), recently serviced and refinished, should garner $12,000-$15,000. Also, a 1960 Enicar Sherpa Graph Mark 1A Swiss chronograph with a stainless-steel case and band and featuring the rare ‘gladius’ hands, utilizing the iconic Valjoux 72 chronograph movement, is expected to rise to $7,000-$10,000.

A sapphire and diamond necklace featuring a one claw-set heart mixed cut natural blue sapphire of 8.24 carats, and 31 channel-set baguette cut (tapered) diamonds weighing a total 1.15 carats, on a 16-inch chain, is estimated to go for $6,500-$7,500; while a 14kt white gold, custom-made diamond cross pendant with a high polish finish, featuring 34 claw-set round brilliant-cut diamonds with a total weight of 8.89 carats, on a 20-inch chain, should bring $6,500-$7,000.
